April 11, 2008

San Francisco – April 11, 2008 - Akibia Senior Security Consultant Evan Wheeler moderated a star panel of digital forensics experts who discussed incident investigations, preparedness, what to expect and what can be achieved. More than 150 RSA Conference registrants attended the sold-out session. The panel included:

  • Detective Lieutenant John J. Mclean of the Medford Police Department also heads the NEMLEC crime lab in New England. He is a professor at Northeastern University and also a co-author of the “Handbook of Computer Crime Investigation: Forensic Tools & Technologies”.
  • John Rhodes works for the National Information Security Assurance group at the Federal Reserve Bank, and he is responsible for architecture and standards among other things.
  • David Thomas is a top litigator for the law firm of Greenberg and Traurig. David helps corporations with issues surrounding intellectual property, and consumer protection litigation both on the state and federal level.
  • Jim DeLorimier works as an Information Security Analyst for New Jersey Manufacturers Insurance focusing on forensics and incident response. He has also worked as an investigator for corporations such as TD Ameritrade and Bistrol Meyer Squib. He has also worked in cooperation with the FBI and Secret Service on many criminal investigations in the past.

Each expert brought their own relative expertise to the discussion, and in doing so, the panel was able to present a balanced look at how to be certain an enterprise organization is prepared if a forensic investigation becomes necessary.

The panel experts discussed how to achieve executive buy in for a forensic investigation plan, and how to determine an organizations acceptable level of risk. The panel also discussed the importance of having updated policies that are leveraged and adhered to throughout the organization. The group then debated what role an enterprise’s internal legal team should play in the investigation process, and the impact of data breach laws and notification laws.

Jim DeLorimier then went into detail on the tools and infrastructure necessary to an investigation. This included setting up a forensic lab, tools and products to consider and when an organization should handle the investigation internally or hire external specialists like Akibia.

Detective McLean explained to the audience when and how to best involve law enforcement in the investigation and how best to work with both federal and local agencies.
