Course Goal
The Superdome Server Maintenance is a 5–day technical training course, which introduces students to Hardware and System Maintenance for the Hewlett–Packard Superdome computers. The ultimate goal of this course is to allow you––with confidence––to work with and administer HP’s Superdome computers.
Audience
This course is meant for individuals responsible for performing any system administration tasks or hardware maintenance tasks on a Superdome system. This includes both System Administrators and Field Support/Hardware Maintenance personnel.
Training Methodology
This course uses active learning to involve the student in their classroom learning and to develop practices that will encourage continuous self–learning. Students will meet the learning objectives through interactive classroom discussion, focused hands–on lab exercises, self–guided research, and scenario–based troubleshooting.

- HP Legacy and sx1000 Superdome Servers
- Associated Support Management System
Course Objectives
Upon completion, students will be able to:
- Recognize a Superdome system
- Recognize the SMS (Support Management System)
- Be familiar with the system features and benefits
- Work with the Management Processor (MP)
- Be familiar with the boot–up process
- Understand device pathing.
- Work with the Processor Dependent Code (PDC) and boot level menus
- Work with the Boot Console Handler (BCH) commands and Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI)
- Work with cell boards and perform basic node partitioning tasks
- Work with the SMS and its associated diagnostics utilities.
- Manage system firmware
- Use the Support Tools manager
- Interpret LEDs and perform basic troubleshooting
- Remove and replace Field Replaceable Units (FRUs)
Course Prerequisites
- Experience maintaining computer hardware
- Experience with the UNIX operating system, e.g. HP–UX
- Akibia’s HP9000 Hardware Maintenance or Mid Range Server Maintenance classes are recommended unless equivalent working experience with HP 9000 and Integrity servers is present.
Class size is limited to 4 students.
