Course Goal

The Sun Storage Maintenance Course is a 5-day technical training course that will prepare students to operate, configure and maintain a wide variety of Sun enterprise storage products.

Audience

This course is intended for Field Service and Support personnel.

Training Methodology

This course uses active learning to involve the student in their classroom learning and to develop practices that will encourage continuous self-learning. Students will meet the learning objectives through interactive classroom discussion, focused hands-on lab exercises, self-guided research, and scenario-based troubleshooting.

Course Scope

The course includes the following products:

  • Solaris 2.8 (Solaris 8)
  • Sun Enterprise Servers
  • A1000, D1000, A3000, A3500FC, A5X00, T3/T3+
  • Sun RAID Manager

Course Objective

Upon completion, students will be able to:

  • Identify Sun storage products and architectures
  • Describe the features and characteristics of SCSI and Fibre Channel interconnect
  • Differentiate between hardware and software RAID devices
  • Describe the key features of the D1000, A1000, A3000, A3500FC, A5X00, T3 and T3+
  • Identify supported storage configurations
  • Identify, remove/replace storage system components
  • Interpret power-on sequence and identify errors
  • Use GUI and command line commands to obtain storage system status and configuration information
  • Isolate A1000, A3000, A3500FC,A5X00, T3 and T3+ hardware faults to the FRU using LEDs and Enclosure Services
  • Research component part numbers and replace faulty FRUs
  • Define and describe the characteristics of RAID, RAID levels, and LUNs
  • Simulate RAID Manager disk failure and complete a disk recovery on a A3000/A3500FC
  • Simulate Volume Manager disk failure and complete a disk recovery on a A5X00
  • Execute luxadm commands to identify system configurations
  • Connect to T3 and T3+ arrays via Ethernet and Serial connections
  • Execute pSOS commands when setting up T3 and T3+ configurations

Course Prerequisites

Akibia's Sun Desktop and Server Maintenance Courses or equivalent experience with Sun systems and Solaris is required. No prior experience in RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) storage, disk management applications or fibre channel is necessary.

Class size is limited to 8 students.
