You need to deploy wireless LANs (WLANs) at your organization’s remote offices—such as retail outlets and branch and satellite offices, to increase worker productivity and make the network more accessible. You are concerned about security at these sites when enabling wireless connectivity and need a cost-effective, reliable security gateway that will provide the same level of security as wired LANs.

Our Solution

VPN-1® UTM Edge™ Wireless (W) unified threat management (UTM) appliances deliver the same security found in VPN-1 UTM Edge appliances with the highest levels of security for wireless networks. These appliances support multiple security protocols, including 802.1x, IPSec over WLAN, RADIUS, WEP, and WPA2 authentication. VPN-1 UTM Edge W also has a dedicated WLAN interface from which administrators can set specific security rules for WLAN segments. This protects wireless interfaces by granting access only to authorized users, preventing hackers from attacking corporate resources and applications.

In addition to supporting 802.11b and 802.11g technologies, VPN-1 UTM Edge W is the only UTM appliance to support Atheros Super G and Extended Range (XR) technologies for WLANs. Providing double the network throughput of 802.11g, Super G enables your wireless network to reach speeds of up to 108 Mbps. And Super G provides faster network performance when users work with bandwidth-intensive applications, such as streaming media and VoIP.

XR technology on VPN-1 UTM Edge W minimizes dead spots and greatly increases the coverage of a wireless network for remote sites, providing connectivity that is more reliable. With XR-enabled clients, your network achieves up to three times the range of a standard access point - up to 300 meters indoors and up to 1 kilometer outdoors.

Wireless Roaming

The Wireless Distribution System (WDS) links available in VPN-1 UTM Edge W allow wireless clients to seamlessly attach to other VPN-1 UTM Edge wireless devices and standards-based access points without changing the client IP address. The access points can be interconnected by WDS links or by traditional wired Ethernet connections. WDS links can also be used to create loop-free topologies, such as a star or tree of access points and can be used together with bridge mode and Spanning Tree Protocol to create redundant topologies, such as a loop or mesh of linked access points.

Wireless Multimedia Quality of Service

VPN-1 UTM Edge W appliances are the only remote office solutions that support Wireless Multimedia QoS, which prioritizes multiple types of traffic flow from different applications - such as audio, video, and voice - under a variety of environmental and traffic conditions. It ensures that time sensitive traffic is transmitted with minimal delay and at expected performance levels.

Hot Spot Support

VPN-1 UTM Edge W can be used to create guest access networks by setting up a hot spot network. Administrators can easily require Web-based user authentication or terms-of-use approval prior to providing access to the network. This enables convenient, yet controlled network access for guest users, without compromising corporate resources.
