Editor's Corner
"It's my responsibility to empower employees to do their jobs via the Internet and network tools provided, without putting the other employees, patients, or the network itself at risk."
John Sabotta, MIS Director, St. Margaret's Health.
Mr. Sabotta provides a clear and articulate mission statement for himself and his organization (see article by SurfControl). As IT security professionals have experienced though, minimizing risk within an organization can be a daunting task. Working smarter and more efficiently are the marching orders to follow, but finding solutions that produce demonstrable results that meet the unique requirements of your organization is the challenge.
In this issue of Bandwidth, we present several articles that explore the strategies and complexities associated with empowering employees while minimizing risks. Topics include availability, reliability,
monitoring, architecture, risk mitigation and management.
SurfControl has provided a case study on how it helped St. Margaret's Health address issues of risk faced by hospital employees. PGP discusses how encryption and management functions protect organizations against data loss and disclosure. Akibia's Chris Lembo presents an overview on Domain Isolation as a means of architecting and protecting an organization's assets. Nokia details the engineering and integration work they do on their network security appliances to ensure the performance, availability and support of their best-in-class solution. Check Point presents their solution for identifying and acting upon the volumes of data generated by IT systems and devices.
These articles reflect the types of issues faced by organizations every day as regulations, laws, and auditors challenge them to demonstrate results in the processes, procedures, and technologies they have selected. Finding and integrating those solutions in a comprehensive manner can be facilitated by having a clear
mandate, such as Mr. Sabotta's. We applaud Mr. Sabotta on his vision and will continue to investigate the marketplace to find solutions that will help him, and all IT security professionals
meet their objectives.
