Course Goal

The ultimate goal of this course is to allow a student---with confidence---to work with and maintain HP's entire line of HP9000 computers.

This hardware-oriented Boot Camp introduces students to the full range of Hewlett-Packard PA-RISC systems. The first week prepares students to operate and maintain HP9000 systems and includes a wide range of servers and workstations. The second week is divided between the V-class server and the new cell-based architecture (also called the Superdome technology) systems. See hardware list below.

Audience

This Boot Camp is intended for the individual who is responsible for maintaining HP9000 systems, not notably someone employed in a Field Service and Support position.

Training Methodology

This course uses active learning to involve the student in their classroom learning and to develop practices that will encourage continuous self-learning. Students will meet the learning objectives through interactive classroom discussion, focused hands-on lab exercises and self-guided research.

Course Scope

The course includes the following products:

• HP-UX 11i and 11.0. [HP-UX 10.20 is also available]
• HP9000 series workstations and servers:
      °  Workstations: 712, B132L, B1000, C200, J280, J5000,
          J6000.
      ° Servers: D, K, L (rp5400), N (rp7400), V2250, rp7410,
          rp8400.
• Software programs:
      °  Support Tools Manager (STM), System Administration
          Manager (SAM), Software Distributor (SD-UX)
          commands, including swinstall, swlist, and swremove.
      ° Common Desktop Environment (CDE).
      ° V-Class online and offline diagnostics.
  

Course Objectives

Upon completion, students will be able to:

• Install HP-UX.
• Describe the HP9000 boot process.
• Work with the Processor Dependent Code (PDC) and Boot Console Handler (BCH) menus.
• Change HP9000 boot parameters.
• Describe the HP-UX start-up process.
• Work with HP-UX commands to facilitate troubleshooting.
• Connect an HP9000 system to a network.
• Describe the important system folders found on HP9000 systems.
• Work with the Guardian Support Processor (GSP).
• Work with the Management Processor (MP).
• Work with cell boards.
      ° Perform basic node partitioning tasks.
• Recognize many HP9000 systems.
• Use the online diagnostic Support Tools Manager (STM) program.
• Interpret LEDs and chassis codes.
• Identify, remove, and replace Field Replaceable Units (FRUs).
• Perform basic troubleshooting.
      ° Use GUI and command line commands to obtain system
         status and configuration information.
      ° Isolate system hardware faults to the FRU using LEDs,
         command line commands, and diagnostic tools.
      ° Research component part numbers.

Course Prerequisites

• Minimum three months employment experience troubleshooting computer systems.
• Basic knowledge about computer hardware components.
• The ability to work with UNIX at the command line level.
