Course Goal

Our Solaris Large System Performance Course is designed to provide an understanding of the Solaris hardware and software environment as it relates to performance.  Fundamental architectural concepts will be discussed and applied to the different components of the system.

Audience

This course is intended for architects, administrators and developers in a large scale Solaris application production environment.  It assumes that the audience will be configuring and administering performance-related components on the system, as well as diagnosing performance problems.

Training Methodology

This course uses active learning to involve students in their classroom learning and to develop practices that will encourage continuous self-learning. Students will meet the course objectives through interactive classroom discussion, focused hands-on lab exercises, self-guided research, and scenario-based troubleshooting.

Course Scope

The course includes use of the following products:

  • Solaris 10 Update 2
  • UltraSPARC PCI Workstations
  • Disk  Drives
  • Networks

Course Content

Major topic areas include:

  • Performance overview
  • CPU Architecture and Operation
  • CPU Utilization and Management
  • Memory Performance
  • Multiple Page Size Support and Memory Placement Optimization
  • Bus management
  • The SCSI Bus and Protocols
  • I/O Operation Characteristics
  • File System Performance and Tuning
  • SAN Performance
  • Network Component Tuning
  • TCP and UDP Tuning
  • System Configuration Information
  • Performance Reporting Utilities
  • Performance Triage
  • DTrace

Upon completion, students should be able to:

  • Identify the hardware and software components of the system and their performance effects
  • Determine the throughput capabilities of each system component
  • Measure and interpret the performance of each system component
  • Manage the performance trade-offs when tuning a system
  • Configure and tune the system to improve performance for specific workloads
  • Measure and tune new system functionality based on its characteristics
  • Quickly determine the source of acute performance problems

Course Prerequisites

Familiarity with Solaris Administration 8 and or 9 is a must; this is an in-depth course and is not appropriate for inexperienced Solaris system administrators.

Course Length

Solaris 10 Differences for Solaris Administrators Course is 5 days of training. Class size is limited to 8 students.
