Course Goal

This course teaches key HPUX and HP9000 System Administration knowledge and skills, with the goal of providing competent administrators for HP9000 systems.

Audience

The HP9000 System Administration Course is intended for the individual who is responsible for performing any system administration tasks on an HP9000 system. Field Support or Hardware Maintenance personnel will also find this course beneficial.

Training Methodology

This course uses active learning to involve the student in their classroom learning and to develop practices that will encourage continuous self-learning. Students will meet the learning objectives through interactive classroom discussion, focused hands-on lab exercises and self-guided research.

Course Scope

The course includes the following products:

  • HPUX 11.X
  • HP9000 series desktops and servers
  • System Adminstration Manager (SAM), Software(SW) Install Tool and Common Desktop Environment (CDE)

Course Objectives

Upon completion, students will be able to:

  • Explain the duties and tasks of system adminstration
  • Change HP9000 boot parameters
  • Install HPUX
  • Describe the HPUX startup process and list important HPUX directories
  • Configure device files and disks
  • Create and maintain an HPUX file system
  • Manage swap space
  • Reconfigure the HPUX kernel
  • Create and manager user accounts
  • Customize user accounts and edit initialization files
  • Change security settings
  • Control processes
  • Schedule CRON jobs
  • Install additional software and patches
  • Connect to a network
  • Perform backups
  • Configure print services and print documents

Course Prerequisites

Fundamental knowledge of computer hardware/software components and operating a computer through a Command Line Interface and/or Graphical User Interface is required. Previous experience in UNIX environments is desired. These requirements can be met by attendance in Akibia's HP9000 Maintenance Course.

Course Length

HP9000 System Adminstration is 5 days. Class size is limited to 10 students.
