Course Goal

Akibia's Sun Fire High-End Server Maintenance Course will prepare students to operate, configure and maintain Sun's 12K-25K Sun Fire Servers. In this course, students will gain the necessary knowledge and skills to configure Sun Fire Server 12K, 15K, 20K and 25K hardware, work at the SMS command level, domain and kernel shells, interpret diagnostics, troubleshoot faulty Server systems and components to the Field Replaceable Unit (FRU), and leverage Internet and Multimedia resources for continuous learning.

Audience

This course is intended for Field Service and Support personnel.

Training Methodology

This course uses active learning to involve the student in their classroom experience and to develop practices that will encourage continuous learning. Students will meet the course objectives through interactive classroom discussion, focused hands-on lab exercises, hardware take-apart, self-guided research, and scenario-based troubleshooting.

Course Scope

The course includes the following:
  • Solaris 8 and Solaris 9 Operating Systems
  • Sun Fire 12K, 15K, 20K and 25K servers
  • System Management Service software
  • Platform and Domain navigation
  • Dynamic Reconfiguration

Course Objectives

Upon completion, students will be able to:

  • Identify Hardware components found within the 12K-25K servers
  • Differentiate server system busses, architectures and components
  • Correctly configure a Sun Fire Server
  • Interpret device paths and targets
  • Analyze server system boot sequence and identify boot sequence errors
  • Configure, retrieve and interpret Power-On Self Tests (POST), and diagnostic menus and routines
  • Execute Open Boot PROM (OBP) and Nonvolatile RAM (NVRAM) commands
  • Run Solaris commands to obtain Sun Fire system statutes and configurations
  • Operate System Management Service (SMS) to configure the platform and domains
  • Identify faulty components and retrieve system status using SMS
  • Navigate between SMS and domain environments
  • Use Solaris commands to obtain server system status and configuration information
  • Understand the Management Network (MAN) setup required for communications
  • Use Dynamic Reconfiguration to move boards between domains
  • Isolate system faults to the FRU
  • Research component part numbers and replace faulty FRUs

Course Prerequisites

Successful completion of Akibia's Sun Fire Mid-Range Server Maintenance Course (SFM), and a familiarity with troubleshooting the Sun Entrerprise Server product line and a basic working knowledge of the Solaris/UNIX environment.
