Course Goal

Our Sun Ultra Enterprise Server Maintenance Course will prepare students to operate, configure and maintain Sun Ultra Enterprise Servers. In this course, students will gain the necessary knowledge and skills to configure Enterprise Server hardware, interpret diagnostics, troubleshoot faulty Enterprise Server systems and components to the Field Replaceable Unit (FRU), use Dynamic Reconfiguration and device replacement to restore systems to proper functioning order, and leverage Internet and Multimedia resources for continuous learning.

This course is intended for field service and support personnel.

This course uses active learning to involve the students in their classroom learning and to develop practices that will encourage continuous learning. Students will meet the course objectives through interactive classroom discussion, focused hands-on lab exercises, self-guided research, and scenario-based troubleshooting.

Course Prerequisites

Successful completion of Akibia's Sun Desktop Maintenance Course (SDTM), or familiarity with troubleshooting the Sun Desktop product line and a basic working knowledge of the Solaris/UNIX environment.

Course Scope

The course includes the following products:

  • Solaris 2.6, 2.7 (Solaris 7), 2.8 (Solaris 8)
  • Ultra Enterprise 250, 450, 3000, 3500, 4000, 4500, 5000, 6000
  • Legacy Server systems (SPARCServer 1000, SPARCCenter 2000) are also available

Course Content

Upon completion, students will be able to:

  • Identify Ultra Enterprise Server models, and research new models
  • Differentiate server system busses and components
  • Configure an Ultra Enterprise Server and identify device paths and targets
  • Analyze server system boot sequence and identify boot sequence errors
  • Remove and replace components in a live system using Dynamic Reconfiguration and cfgadmin
  • Configure, retrieve and interpret Power-On Self Tests (POST), Open Boot Diagnostics (OBDiag) and Enterprise diagnostic menus and routines
  • Execute Open Boot PROM (OBP) and NonVolatile RAM (NVRAM) commands specific to Ultra Enterprise Servers
  • Use Solaris commands to obtain server system status and configuration information
  • Operate Sun Management Center/System Monitor (SyMon) and Sun Validation Test Suite (VTS) to identify faulty components and retrieve system status remotely
  • Isolate system faults to the FRU Research component part numbers and replace faulty FRUs
