Course Goal
Our Fibre Channel and Storage Area Networks (SAN) Concepts Workshop explores elements found in common SAN environments. Students will gain an understanding of Fibre Channel data communications protocol, SCSI protocol encapsulation, SAN hardware and software and its implementation in the SAN (Point-to-Point, Arbitrated Loop, and Switched/Fabric topologies). This fast paced workshop focuses on taking theory into practical application. Students will learn the configuration requirements for SAN hardware including Host Bus Adapters, Host Device Addressing, Switch Configuration, Zoning, and LUN Masking. Emphasis is placed on using the knowledge gained during this workshop in the day-to-day trouble shooting of connectivity and LUN access issues in complex SAN configurations.
Audience
This course is intended for sales support and field service/support personnel.
Training Methodology
This course uses active learning to involve the students in their classroom learning and to develop practices that will encourage continuous self-learning. Students will meet the course objectives through interactive classroom discussion, focused lab exercises, self-guided research, and scenario-based exercises. Class size is limited to 6 students to ensure an optimal learning environment.
Course Scope
The course examines a multi-vendor SAN environment including the following products:
- Windows 2000/2003, HPUX, and Solaris server platforms
- Host Bus Adapters from key OEMs (Qlogic, Emulex, JNI)
- Fibre Channel Switches from key OEMs (Brocade and McData)
- Disk RAID Array (EMC Symmetrix)
Course Content
Upon completion, students should be able to:
- Identify Fibre Channel/SAN hardware and features
- Use a Fibre Channel Protocol analyzer to monitor and analyze Fibre Channel data flow, Arbitrated Loop Initialization and Arbitration, and Fabric Login
- Cable the SAN
- Implement multi-vendor SAN environments using servers, switches/hubs and storage devices
- Configure Fabric Zoning, Persistent Binding, and LUN Masking.
- Verify SAN storage device availability through Windows 2000/2003, HPUX, and Solaris Operating Systems
- Trouble shoot complex SAN environments using Host based logs and utilities, Switch based logs and utilities, and EMC’s SymCLI command line interface
- Research new SAN and Fibre Channel products and developments on the Internet
Course Prerequisites
A technical background with experience in the UNIX or NT computing systems and some familiarity with data communications, SCSI, or TCP/IP networking. No SAN or Fibre Channel experience is required.
Course Length
Fibre Channel and Storage Area Networks Concepts Workshop is 4 days in length.
