Course Goal

Our Solaris Administration Workshop I Course will prepare students to administer Sun Solaris systems in a standalone environment. In this course, students will gain the necessary knowledge and skills to install the Solaris operating system, manage file systems and patches, conduct backups, control systems processes, manage users and devices and configure printer services. This course will prepare students for the Sun Microsystems’ Certified Solaris 10 System Administration Exam Part I.

Audience

This course is intended for System Administrators and field service and support personnel that require basic Solaris Systems Administration skills.

Training Methodology

This course uses active learning to involve students in their classroom learning and to develop practices that will encourage continuous self-learning. Students will meet the course objectives through interactive classroom discussion, focused hands-on lab exercises, self-guided research, and scenario-based troubleshooting.

Course Scope

The course includes use of the following products:

  • Solaris 8 - 10
  • SPARC, UltraSPARC, Sun PCI, and x86 Workstations
  • CDROM and Tape Drives
  • Printers

Course Content

Upon completion, students should be able to:

  • Describe key system administration terms and concepts
  • Install and boot the Solaris 10 operating environment
  • Manage File Systems
  • Use the pkgadd command to add software packages
  • Add and maintain patches
  • Change system run levels
  • Implement system security
  • Perform user administration
  • Understand the new Service Management Facility (SMF) functionality
  • Manage system processes
  • Set up event logging and use auditing utilities
  • Perform file backups and restorations

Course Prerequisites

Familiarity with Solaris's Open Boot Prom, Unix shells, file management, file system navigation, booting a workstation, on-line manual pages and the VI editor is required. These prerequisites can be met by attending Akibia's Sun Desktop Maintenance Course or equivalent coursework.
