Course Goal
Our Solaris Administration Workshop II Course will prepare students to administer Sun Solaris systems in a networked environment. In this course, students will gain the necessary knowledge and skills to install the Solaris operating system, administer the Service Access Facility (SAF), configure, manage and troubleshoot the Network File System (NFS) and Network Information Service (NIS) environments, add network clients, and configure Jumpstart.
Audience
This course is intended for System Administrators and field service and support personnel that require advanced Solaris Systems Administration skills.Training Methodology
This course uses active learning to involve students in their classroom learning and to develop practices that will encourage continuous self-learning. Students will meet the course objectives through interactive classroom discussion, focused hands-on lab exercises, self-guided research, and scenario-based troubleshooting.Course Scope
The course includes use of the following products:
- Solaris 8/9
- SPARC, UltraSPARC, and Sun PCI Workstations
- CDROM and Tape Drives
- Printers
Course Content
Upon completion, students should be able to:
- Install the Solaris operating system
- Identify and describe the files and commands used to control and monitor access to various machines in a networked environment
- Understand security issues related to Role-Based Access Control
- Configure NFS to support a client-server environment
- Set up and configure CacheFS file systems
- Use the automounter
- Describe the various naming services: DNS, NIS, NIS+, FNS
- Configure and administer the NIS environment
- Add AutoClient support to a server
- Use JumpStart to automate Solaris OS installation
- Install and use the Solstice AdminSuite
Course Prerequisites
Familiarity with installing the Solaris operating system, managing Solaris file system packages and patches, conducting backups, controlling Solaris systems processes, managing users and devices, and configuring Solaris printer services. These prerequisites can be met by attending Akibia's Solaris Administration Workshop I Course or equivalent coursework.

Solaris Administration Workshop II Course is 5 days of training. Class size is limited to 8 students.
